Guidance on Standing Poses
Standing poses all have one thing in common - you're on at least one of your feet. As such, there are a few things that you should remember when practicing them.
One, try to keep your feet (or foot) underneath you. Seriously. Okay, what I mean by this is that its important to notice the foot, and try to feel the weight moving into it. Feel support through that foot. If you can bring awareness there, you'll often find that balance becomes much easier. At the same time, this gives you a place to move from - think of the pose beginning at the foot or feet and a line of energy emerging from there in the direction of the pose. Usually this means toward the drishti (or gazing point).
It also helps if you notice the strength in your legs. This is a continuation of the support that you gather from your feet. Feeling that support pressing through your legs as well as rising up at the same time can bring lightness into the pose. This can be very helpful in things like warrior, where it can be a real struggle to hold yourself low with integrity for a long time.
