On The Road - Journey 1

An account of our Motorcycle trip from Calgary to Far Away and hopefully Back Again

To begin with.

The rain started not much before Canmore and for the first part, the worst of it was the cold hands. I did have some rubber gloves to keep my hands dry, and I used my think hiking gloves for warm inserts, but they weren't quite enough. Gary bought a new pair of waterproof ice climbing gloves in Canmore. They were not waterproof.Cold hands can be pretty miserable.

The rain let up south of Radium and it was mostly dry to Cranbrook. Not so the next moring. A steady downpour. We stopped at a roadside cafe and got the suggestion to go south. That sounded good and so we did. The rain was terrible, the road very slick and it was hard to see through our visors. The rain suits were pretty good, but the hands still cold.

There are no pictures from the first two days of the trip. Didn't want to get the camera wet! Lots of rain and tough driving on wet roads. So we headed south and found the sun on the east side of the Cascades along the Columbia River. When we crossed the Columbia River near Canal Flats in BC, it was not much more than a rushing stream about 50 ft across. A little bigger here!

Gary decided to change the route from into Washington and down into Oregon, to straight south first chance we got. It worked out. We did find better weather on the third day south of SandPoint Idaho.
It is very windy along the Columbia. Gary is quite delighted to get his picture taken without hair blowing in the wind.

In the early morning we took the highway south from the Columbia River and around Mt. Hood. A rather spectacular volcanic mountain sitting all by itself.

A much better picture

Finally on the Oregon Coast!

In the motel room overlooking the Pacific Ocean near Yachats Oregon. Yeah. You pronounce it!
We wanted a room with a patio overlooking the ocean. They were all booked. The view didn't seem so bad though!

Without a patio, we did the next best thing. Ordered a pizza and brought some beer to the rocks overlooking the ocean and had our supper there. A warm sun, a slight breeze, crashing waves. It was awesome!

Taking a little stroll

Getting a bit wet under the spray of the crashing waves!

Bob on a bit of beach between the rocky fingers fighting the unrelenting sea.

There was a new house being built overlooking the ocean. It is quite the house with a front wall that is made entirely of glass, three stories high. Metal trusses and supports. We had to investigate it. Nice that the front door isn't in place yet! Unfinished but still spectacular.Gary is on the deck that leads from the third floor bedroom.
